Abstract

Dunhuang is celebrated for not only its centuries of artistic world-building but also the wealth of stories and talents that have shaped the legacy of Chinese art. Among its many treasures is the Lishu-style stele “Cao Quan Bei” (185 AD), which recounts the life of Cao Quan, a Dunhuang-born official of the Eastern Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD, 25 – 220 AD). This stele stands as a precious example of early Chinese literature and the elegance of clerical script (Lishu). In this workshop, Shirley Cheng will lead participants in exploring the fine techniques of Eastern Han Dynasty Lishu calligraphy, while also considering its relevance and possibilities in contemporary art.

Artist Bio

Zhuo (Shirley) Cheng, a PhD candidate in the Department of History at Fudan University and visiting scholar at Harvard FAS CAMLab (2024-2025). Her research interest centers on the history of ancient Chinese art and archaeology.
