The balance and compromise between tradition and innovation, modernity and locality, the West and the East, have always been topics in modern Chinese architectural practice and discourse. Henry Killam Murphy (1877－1954) is a significant figure in the history of modern Chinese architecture. However, he has been overlooked in the contemporary debates about “localization” and “globalization” by both Chinese and Western researchers. Since the publication of the Chinese translation of Building in China: Henry K. Murphy’s “Adaptive Architecture,” 1914-1935. by Jeffrey W. Cody in 2022, it has been an excellent opportunity to discuss Henry Murphy’s influence on modern Chinese architecture and urban planning, and more importantly, the underlying social, cultural and economic context, as well as the meaning of “tradition and innovation” in a broader context of the modern Chinese architectural world.
