Professor Tong Ming
Tong Ming is an architectural and urban design professor from the Southeast University in Nanjing, responsible for teaching and research in urban design, urban regeneration, and urban policy analysis. Tong Ming is also the principal architect of TM Studio, a Shanghai-based architectural office, and an expert for Shanghai urban planning committee, a member of Academic Committee of Urban Design in the Urban Planning Society of China.
Tong Ming focuses on both theoretical research and practical work in architecture and urban planning, participates actively in various communication programs of international teaching and research work. As a specialist in Chinese modern architecture history, Tong Ming has organized several important exhibitions and academic events recently. He acted as the chief curator for the exhibitions, Foundation (Nanjing, 2017), The Rise of the Modernity (Shanghai, 2018), Accomplishment (Beijing, 2019) for the first Chinese architects who have been trained at U. Penn around 1920s-1930s. These achievements have not only illustrated the early relation between U. Penn and China, but also helped to develop the history of Chinese modern architecture, and opened up a different perspective to encourage further conversations regarding both the present and future state of China’s architecture culture.
中国建筑的觉醒现代性
In the early 20th century, with the opening of China and the development of modern industry and trading, Chinese students started to go abroad for education, and introduced modern architecture back into China. But the modernization of Chinese architecture is still neither a clear process nor a definite result usually, and full of contradictions and complexities, the reason of which in turn stems from the contradictious concept of modernity itself.
The lecture, by focusing on the architectural practice in Shanghai by the first architects trained at Penn, will reassess the developing process of Chinese recent modern architecture with a different vision on how to interpret the concept of modernity, and re-examine the influence of Beaux-Arts education on Chinese modern architecture. It will try to promote a better understanding on the overall image of Chinese modern architecture, and suggest potential to integrate it into the broader scope of modern architecture development.
