Re-investigating the Origin of Ancient Chinese Chromatic Pitch Series from the New Archaeological Findings

Abstract

The term “Pitch Series” refers to the sounds of early Chinese musical instruments and differs from the concept of a scale within tonal music. Recent discoveries of Zhou dynasty bells have provided valuable insights into the development of pitch series in pre-Qin China. During this period, musical pitches were gradually acquired, culminating in the Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng from the early Warring States period, which had developed a chromatic pitch series.
