Lingnan Architecture and Cosmopolitanism

Abstract:
Due to Lingnan’s unique geography, climate, history and culture, and close economic relation with the outer world, Lingnan architecture is an important part of the history of Chinese modern architecture. From the 1970s to the 1980s, with China’s turn toward reform and opening, international hotels in the Lingnan area became an important booming typology, with different design explorations such as adapting to subtropical climate, introducing traditional Lingnan gardens, as well as Modernism. This symposium takes international hotels in the Lingnan Region as an entry point to discuss its typology history and design concept development, and brings important insights into their relationship to the political, economic, and diplomatic context during the transitional period, and links Lingnan architecture and Cosmopolitanism from a new perspective.
