Artist Talk by David Sheldrick

Abstract

In this talk David Sheldrick will discuss his process blending photography and artificial intelligence, exploring how new media shapes our relationship to the past. Sheldrick’s work gathers datasets from estate sales, second-hand markets, and private collections, digitally transforming these historic photographs into evocative, layered compositions. His most recent series, Empire, draws from an archive over 35,000 colour film slides spanning 1940 to 1990, restored and reworked through AI to examine how photography preserves, distorts, and reshapes our view of history. Sheldrick’s work with AI spans fine art and commercial design—he will discuss how to balance the professional and creative potentials of AI tools while maintaining an artistic voice.
