Abstract
Harvard University was among the key overseas destinations for modern Chinese architects. During the first half of the twentieth century, its design education evolved through phases of establishment and reform, ultimately becoming a major center for the dissemination of modernist architectural thought. Drawing on archival materials from the Harvard University Archives and the Graduate School of Design (GSD), this lecture undertakes a systematic study of the “Harvard-trained” cohort of Chinese architects from 1902 to 1952, in order to examine the influence of Harvard and its design education in the development of modern architecture in China.
