This April, CAMLab is bringing back our Double Feature Film Screening! Just like last year, we’ll be presenting four classic films in pairs, each set thoughtfully connected by themes, artistic approaches, or historical backdrops, inviting engaging dialogues between them.

From Friday, April 12 to Saturday, April 13, we dive into narratives of youth during the tumultuous times of Mao and Chiang. On the following days, we will navigate the dense Ussuri forest and the stretches of the Suzhou River under the theme of “Odyssey.”

Prof. Eugene Wang will also join and host a post-screening roundtable discussion on Sunday, April 14.

青春 Youth

在激荡的大时代中，以少年的视角关怀历史。当阳光穿过海峡，青春的成长与彷徨并存：一代少年正在悄悄长大。两天的“青春（Youth）”主题放映聚焦姜文导演的《阳光灿烂的日子》和侯孝贤导演的《风柜来的人》，回望时代洪流中的成长之路。

What does it mean to come of age in a time of historical upheaval? How do individual journeys of youth merge with the significant events of a nation undergoing dramatic changes? Join us on Thursday and Friday evenings at Harvard FAS CAMLab for an enlightening screening of Jiang Wen’s “In the Heat of the Sun” and Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s “The Boys from Fengkuei.” These films provide a poignant glimpse into the lives of young people during the tumultuous periods under Mao and Chiang, highlighting their vibrant experiences and the challenges they faced against a backdrop of significant historical events.

苦旅 Odyssey

从乌苏里莽林到苏州河畔，远东大地上的苦旅之人在离乱中认识自己、体味生命。两天的“苦旅（Odyssey）”主题放映聚焦美国斯皮尔伯格导演的《太阳帝国》和日本黑泽明导演的《德尔苏·乌扎拉》，追寻颠沛流离中的心灵归属。
