Abstract
Using the “Bo Wu Tu Hwa” of Guo Cui Xue Bao as a basis for discussion, this lecture examines the transformation of the concept of “acquiring Knowledge” or (shiwu,識物) among Chinese intellectuals of the late Qing and early republican era. The central question is how these modern Chinese intellectuals understood the natural world, as well as the impact of Western knowledge on their views.
